Miskolc students on field trip in Germany with Pannonia Program

19. October 2025. 20:35

Between August 25 and September 4, 2025, five foreign students studying in Miskolc participated in a mapping field trip in Kirchleus, Germany. The 11-day mapping field trip was organized by the Geological Institute of the Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt under the leadership of Dr. Joachim Blau and Dr. Rainer Petschick. The group from the University of Miskolc was led by Dr. Felicitász Velledits. The goal was to develop the students' mapping skills.

During the first two days after arrival, all geological formations to be mapped were presented to the students, and the formation conditions of the rocks were explained. In the introductory lectures, the students repeated the tasks related to mapping. They practiced the exploration descriptions and the tilt-strike measurement. The students mapped in groups of 3. Each group consisted of two German students and one student from Miskolc. Each group was given an area to be mapped, for which a geological map had to be prepared, each excavation had to be described in detail, and measurements had to be taken.

The students were able to learn about the Germanic type Triassic and Jurassic formations on site. They had the opportunity to edit geological maps using both traditional methods and the latest software. Overall, it can be stated that the knowledge of the Miskolc students reached the level of the German students, and even exceeded it in some areas. The fieldwork also offered an opportunity to increase the visibility of the University of Miskolc, and hopefully there will be an opportunity for cooperation between the two universities (ME, Wolfgang Goethe University) in the future.

The stay abroad was made possible by the Pannónia scholarship.
